Cowboys and Homeboys

Cowboys

Richard and Nathan got to go with our friends to the Cowboys game today. Nathan told Richard he saw a lot of cool things today. I was getting ready to go to the game (we were given 2 tickets) when Richard told me they were playing the Seahawks. Nathan's flag football team was the Seahawks. I looked at Richard and told him I couldn't go. He needed to take Nathan. Nathan has been obsessed with football lately. When most 7 year olds wake up on Saturday mornings and watch cartoons, Nathan turns on a recorded football game and watches that.

Homeboys

Tonight Richard made the comment that he has cut someone's head open before. Of course they were already dead. Nathan said, "Homeboy was dead."

Daniel the Songwriter

At dinner, Daniel announced, "I made up a song, but it has a bad word, so we can't sing it. We have to skip the word."

When pressed to tell us what the word was, he wouldn't do it. Then he said he made up another song, but it was full of bad words.

Where is he learning this stuff? And what exactly does he consider a bad word?

What's Been Going On?

Way too much. That's why I haven't written in a while. Nathan is playing flag football and absolutely loving it. He runs so fast! In one game, he scored four touchdowns. He doesn't get his flag pulled very much because no one can catch him! Daniel is busy in pre-school. He actually has homework - cutting pictures that start with letters of the alphabet out of a magazine. He has a different letter each week. We had to have a conversation about cutting out the entire picture, not just a corner of it. Just because he knows what the picture is doesn't mean everyone else does.

Daniel is a cowboy for Halloween complete with cowboy boots (which he loves to wear). He turns into a dancer with those on. It's a cross between the hoedown throwdown and tap dancing. Nathan is Ben 10. He really just got a toy Omnitrix to wear on his wrist and he's wearing a black shirt. Not our best effort at a Halloween costume but he's enjoying the toy.

Nathan has worked on his school science project - creating a hat to represent the word mass. He and Richard got out the power tools and they made a scale and screwed to the top of the hat. I'll get a picture on here soon. It's pretty good. I found out they got to pick their words this year and before I could get out, "What did you pick mass for?" (in a not-so-nice tone), Richard saved me by asking, "Nathan, what made you choose the word mass?" Nathan's answer was, "I didn't know what it was and I thought it might be interesting to learn something about it." Such the GT kid. And now, Richard's decided he needs more power tools for projects like this. Guess I know what he'll be getting for Christmas.

Daniel's been a little sick this week. He and I got to stay home on Monday. He's only been running fever and has a little cough. I called the doctor and they didn't want to see him unless his fever went above 101.8 and wouldn't break with Tylenol. So he was fine by Wednesday but Wednesday night he started feeling bad again, so I took him home early from church. When Nathan found out he wasn't feeling well, here was the discussion he had with Dad:

Nathan: "Well, I just think we need to take him to the doctor. I mean, the doctor said not to come unless it's over 100...101...108...well, his fever is up then it's back down I mean we just need to take him. It's 100 then it's 99 then it's 100 again. We just need to take him to the doctor.

Richard: "We don't need to take him to the doctor because the kids at the doctor are really sick and Daniel's just a little bit sick. Right now, he probably just has a cold that his body has to fight off and he'll get better. We don't want him getting sicker from the doctor's office."

Nathan: "Well, what kind of disease does he have?"

And, one more story from Daniel. This one is potty humor though, so if it offends you, don't keep reading. Daniel was using the bathroom while I was getting ready one morning (we're all sharing one bathroom right now). He said something and I didn't understand him, so I asked him to repeat it.

He said, "I wasn't talking to you."
I said, "Oh, well then who were you talking to?"
"The poo-poo."
"Oh. Well, what did you tell the poo-poo?"
"I said, 'Will you just hurry up, please?'"
Then, I heard him "go" and he said, "Thanks."

Quotes this Week

We were walking in to Nathan's indoor football practice and it was raining. Nathan said, "Mom, you know why I put my mouthguard in my mouth? So it won't get wet."

Daniel: "Mom, I changed my mind of what I want to be when I grow up and no changebacks. I want to be a potty worker."

The Life of Joseph

We have family devotionals each week but got off schedule because of China and getting back in our normal routine. Last night we just reviewed the life of Joseph we've been studying this summer. Nathan made the observation that Joseph's life (in his words) had a lot of ups and downs. Something good would happen then something bad would happen. I asked him how he thought Joseph dealt with all these ups and downs. What did Joseph have that helped him? I thought I was prompting for the answer "God," but Daniel quickly answered, "A stick!"

Daniel's quote for today: "Perfect makes practice!"

When I Get My Own Room by Daniel

"I'm going to have my own nightlight and my own animals. And I'm going to make a sign with a person and a lock and the number 4. For 4's only!"

(Should I tell him he'll be 5 before we get into a house with his own room?)

Too Much Food Network

The other morning I made blueberry muffin bread and went in to take out of the oven and get it ready. Nathan called out to me, "Mom, are you plating yet?"
